5 Tips to Make Your Extensions Last Longer

5 Tips to Make Your Extensions Last Longer

Professional-quality hair extensions are more than just a temporary style upgrade; they're an investment that enhances your self-confidence, the health of your natural hair, and your overall appearance. Ensuring that this investment stands the test of time requires proper care and maintenance. Kristin Grip, owner of KOVI Hair and inventor of the beaded wefts, offers invaluable insights on maximizing the longevity of your hair extensions.

1. Do Not Sleep with Wet Hair

One of the cardinal rules to prolong the life of your hair extensions is to never sleep with wet or damp hair. Moisture left overnight can lead to matting which can be a disaster. If you toss and turn at night with wet hair, your hair can dry into mattes which can be nearly impossible to get out without causing damage to your extensions and even your natural hair. TRUST US, this is big word of advice - don't sleep with wet extensions. Make sure your extensions are completely dry before hitting the pillow.

2. Brush Your Extensions 2x Daily and Gently

Yes, there is a correct way to brush your extensions! Daily brushing is essential to keeping your hair looking top-notch. We recommend brushing first thing in the morning, after washing your hair and at night before bed. Use a soft-bristle wet brush such as Olivia Garden OG Brush Detangler. While holding your extensions in small sections, brush starting with the ends and work your way upward to the roots. Hold the hair at the roots to avoid undue stress on the bonds or attachment points.

3. Use Extension-Friendly Products

You just made a big investment on the hair of your dreams- don't make the mistake of using cheap products on them! Extensions are not just like our natural hair they require extra moisture and high-end products to look their best. Hair extensions have gone though heavy processing and require salon quality products to keep them hydrated, healthy, and long-lasting. @HairByKristinGrip shares some of her favorite products to use on her clients are: Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture ShampooAlterna Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Conditioner, and UNITE Hair 7SECONDS Detangler Leave-In Conditioner

4. Embrace Silk Pillowcases

Say goodbye to frizz by switching to a silk pillowcase! This might seem like a small change, but it can be a game-changer. Silk is gentler on your natural hair and extensions, reducing friction that can lead to tangling and breakage. By minimizing friction, you're extending the life of your investment every night you rest your head.

5. Commit to Regular Maintenance

Just as a car needs regular tune-ups, hair extensions require periodic maintenance appointments. Depending on the type of extensions, your stylist will reposition, tighten, or replace any bonds that have loosened over time. Staying on top of maintenance appointments ensures that your extensions remain secure and your hair stays healthy.

In the world of hair extensions, the adage "good hair isn't cheap, and cheap hair isn't good" rings true. Investing in high-quality extensions means investing in your confidence, appearance, and overall well-being. By following these tips provided by Kristin Grip and implementing a consistent care routine, you're not only preserving the beauty of your extensions but also safeguarding the health of your natural hair. Remember, taking the time to care for your extensions is an extension of caring for yourself.
